Fiber Leadership Index · Pathway Report

How fiber finance leaders reach the CFO seat.

We traced 580 source-linked career steps behind 90 named fiber finance leaders, including the 85 sitting CFOs. The CFO seat is the most consistently elevated in fiber, and the market hires it from outside more than it grows it.

Fiber buys its CFOs.

Of the 85 sitting CFOs, 56 came from another employer, 20 were promoted from within, and 9 have no public prior chronology. 37 of the outside hires came from outside broadband, and only 5 came from a CFO seat at another fixed-broadband operator. 46 of 85 are in their first CFO seat. That is the lowest internal-promotion rate of the four functional families; compare the COO seat, where 31 of 57 were promoted from within.

Finance/Accounting is the dominant feeder: 69 of the 79 leaders with a known or bounded first telecom role entered telecom in Finance/Accounting (87.3%).

Public accounting is a real foundation.

Only 20 of 85 sitting CFOs started their careers in telecom. Public-accounting experience appears in 26 of 85 histories (30.6%), and 11 passed through investment banking or private equity on the way to the seat. The median chronology contains 5 prior roles across 4 to 5 employers, and at least three prior roles were located for 70 of 85 (82.4%).

The gaps are small and specific.

Only 10 of 100 operators have no named whole-finance owner in public sources, and 5 more run finance below the strict C-suite threshold. Three of those ten are seats that emptied in 2026: a CFO who left for another operator, one absorbed by a merger, one folded into a parent. When a fiber operator lacks a visible CFO, it is the exception that needs explaining.

About the data.

Findings come from the Fiber Leadership Index, a source-backed census of leadership at 100 U.S. fixed-broadband operators (research snapshot August 22, 2026). A company is included when it operates a mass-market fixed-broadband network under its own retail brand; 11 additional researched entities outside that rule are excluded from every published aggregate. Every published fact resolves to a logged public source, unknowns stay visible, and no individuals are named. Point Broadband and Clearwave Fiber carry two pre-merger CFO records and are counted once, so every count in this report is one person per seat. Private operators rarely announce sub-C-suite moves, so where no announcement exists, role history is drawn from source-linked career chronologies. Read the Fiber Leadership Index and the full methodology. Where no chief is publicly identified, Lightwheel’s internal research files hold at least one named functional owner or near-miss at 129 of the 135 such seats across the four families. This is descriptive public-source research. It does not rank companies or predict performance.
