The thinnest chief bench in the C-suite.

57 of 100 operators have a strict commercial chief. Another 17 run commercial from an SVP or VP seat, so broader named coverage reaches 74 of 100. The bench matters now: enterprise, carrier, and hyperscaler demand rewards go-to-market leadership that most operators have not yet elevated.

A promote-or-hire coin flip, leaning outside.

Appointment routes across the 60 records: 32 external hires, 21 internal promotions, 2 founders, 5 not publicly documented. Boards go outside for this seat more often than they promote, but the internal path is real.

The remits are bundled: 55 of 60 strict leaders carry a combined commercial remit, 40 carry marketing, 31 sales, and 20 each customer and growth. The leading first supported telecom function was Marketing/Product at 14 of 55 (25.5%).

Deep, traceable careers.

The career census contains 645 source-linked employment steps for 82 named commercial leaders. At least three prior roles were located for 78 of 82 (95.1%), and the median strict-leader chronology spans 7 prior roles across 6 employers. Prior operator exposure appears in 51 of 60 strict-leader histories (85%).

About the data.

Findings come from the Fiber Leadership Index, a source-backed census of leadership at 100 U.S. fixed-broadband operators (research snapshot August 22, 2026). A company is included when it operates a mass-market fixed-broadband network under its own retail brand; 11 additional researched entities outside that rule are excluded from every published aggregate. Every published fact resolves to a logged public source, unknowns stay visible, and no individuals are named. Private operators rarely announce sub-C-suite moves, so where no announcement exists, role history is drawn from source-linked career chronologies. Read the Fiber Leadership Index and the full methodology. Where no chief is publicly identified, Lightwheel’s internal research files hold at least one named functional owner or near-miss at 129 of the 135 such seats across the four families. This is descriptive public-source research. It does not rank companies or predict performance.
